I was wondering why the Storj team doesn't just do a 1:1 transition without a crowdsale? It seems like the crowdsale is introducing a lot of FUD and uncertainty whilst also screwing over early investors. I can't think of a way a crowdsale benefits both early investors and people buying from the crowdsale.
Blockchain Projects with the Most Dev Activity on Github—June, 2019
The month of June showed significant changes in rankings for activity on Github, with projects like Streamr, Colony, and Truffle all slipping out of the Top 20 after a good showing in the previous month of May. June also saw big moves from perennial developmental leaders like Status and Storj. Ethereum still dominates the charts from top to bottom. Of the top 20 projects for developer activity, 16 are built on Ethereum, 1 is built on Tendermint, 1 is built on EOS, 1 is Aelf, and newcomer IoTex. This suggests what many already know: that the vast majority of blockchain developer activity is on the Ethereum network. Below are the top 10 projects on State of the Dapps by developer activity over the past 30 days as of July 3rd, 2019. See the full reporthere.
So I spent the weekend trying to wrap my mind around MaidSafe. Below are some of the notes I came away with. They’re all direct quotes, mostly from (what seem to be) reputable folks, and mostly on Reddit forums. The notes are scattered, but I thought I’d share them as-is in case others are looking to learn more about the basics of MaidSafe and how it compares to other cryptos. Simply Google the quote if you want the context or to know who the writer is. Thanks to everyone whose quote/s appear below! Hope this helps … If Ethereum is a swarm federation, then MaidSafe is swarm nation of swarm tribes. In other words, a federated network of mini independent consensus teams decide on their own but they are limited in what they can do based on the decisions made around them. They [Ethereum and MaidSafe] are very different and cater towards completely different use cases… SafeNet is actually Tor on crack. (the software that enables people to surf anonymous). It's kinda sick. Imagine if Tor had better security, was faster, no need for third party hosting as the network itself could host and on top of that an inbuilt coin system! That is essentially what SafeNet is and the potential is mindblowing. Let's say those points above for some reason doesn't impress you, then just consider the fact that MAID is almost a perfectly efficient system for decentralized storage as well. That alone has potential out of this world. That well know company "dropbox", which is a dinosaur compared to this tech is worth something like $10 billion.. The Safe network could eat the deep web, Apple iCloud, and even the WordPress cms that this blog is built on as a tasty starter before moving on to bigger things. … to be able to host files and websites on the system and [MaidSafe] uses Proof Of Resources unlike anything else. Maidsafe > P2P-based system for storage and routing … No log for time like in a blockchain. More like digital cash, where the last owner singes it over to the new one. People can "Farm" Safecoin by providing storage and bandwidth to the network. It's the way the internet should have been built and that it's on-top the existing one, is incidental. … There's been a lot of work done .. close on 9 years.. and the way that it works removing duplication of fragments, means that the cost of using SAFE will be less than a 'normal' cloud service provider. MaidSafe's SAFE network also can do distributed computing (as opposed to Storj, afaik), thus claiming that they can replace/integrate any internet service of today. Technologically, Storj uses a blockchain for security. MaidSafe claim that they can do without a blockchain; consensus about the state of the network and its integrity is reached by a proof-of-resource mechanism combined with a node ranking system. Yes we [Storj] use the Bitcoin blockchain. It is time proven to work. Maidsafe's project is of a larger scope, which is why they have been in development for 10 years. Maidsafe is a new network paradigm. For the first time in the history, you will be able to approach any computer and log in, and it's as thought it becomes your computer, with all your data, desktop, etc. but without leaving any trace upon logout. In SAFE network people are self policed, self created, and totally unknown. There is no traces of the uses of the network, there is no traces of the transactions of Safecoin. You decide who has access to your data, and nobody can cheat your decision. … And BTW, SAFE is not a Bitcoin/storj/ethereum competitor. SAFE is a centralized systems competitor. The Internet has to be owned by the people, not by 5 companies! LET'S BREAK DOWN CENTRALIZATION! ;) Maidsafe is a 9 years decentralized network development, that can store any kind of data, any (files, databases, blockchains, coins, assets, smart contracts...) with privacy, safety, and freedom.. and with much more efficiency, accessibility, scalability... I'm big fan of Ethereum, but Maidsafe is more ambitious project. We need to separate applications from infrastructure here. Safe network provides a communication network. Pretty much everything else is just an application which builds something upon these foundations. You can create any application using the SAFE network as communication layer, including smart contracts or whatever... any kind of application, there are no limits. About privacy, safety and freedom, there is a huge different. For example, if you perform a transaction with safecoin, the transaction is not reflected in a blockchain, there are no traces of that transaction except from the emisor and the receptor. And exactly the same with data, there is no trace of which data you are sharing and with whom. A blockchain is a public ledger, and a public ledger is far away from the concept of privacy. And [Maid] is more efficient and scalable because doesn't use a blockchain, there is no need to transfer every data to everybody all the time. Blockchains have scalability issues, look at Bitcoin right now and the 1mb debate, and Ethereum will find the same problem. Maidsafe; a network which lets you browse HTML pages (like the Tor network/darknet). It's a new kind of world wide web that uses a technology with the purpose to "kill the server" -> decentralization. So why use Maidsafe? I haven't looked too much into it, but since I have a little history with Freenet here are some things that are worth using it: 1. Censorship resistant. 2. No server down times 3. Everything is encrypted; ISPs/Governments can't see what packages you request -> anonymity. 4. Popular websites like imgur could be extremly fast. 5. With Maidsafe it might be possible to create private groups. MaidSafe is basically creating decentralized applications for anything. They want to decentralize all aspects of the internet. Add Ethereum to the mix and quote from Ursium: "Ethereum has storage capabilities but mostly for state information, not file storage. You would never say, upload a video to the Ethereum chain. Maidsafe is a decentralized storage layer. Ethereum is a decentralized logic layer. The two would work together, for example in the context of creating a decentralized dropbox application."
Maidsafe will have little control over the network once it's live. Actually should for example law enforcement contact them there is little they could assist with. The network lives it's own life with a code base everyone is free to look into (but not copy as they do have some patents)
David is an undisputed (leading?) expert on decentralized networks. • They have taken investment from friends and family • They are in the process of restructuring MAIDsafe to develop apps themselves once the network is live and are seeking investments for that purpose.
Maidsafe == Uncensorable file access. Fragment files across distributed network of computers. No blockchain. The only similarity is that there’s an incentive token.
